SONY SAB has launched what it claims is the first Hindi language channel outside of a satellite, cable or IPTV platform.

Available on the Freeview DTT network in the Greater Manchester area of the UK, SONY SAB’s Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) will offer a blend of family programming, comedy and movies. It is currently available in more than 15.5 million homes on free-to-air satellite and terrestrial in the UK via Sky and Freesat.

Shalin Patel, head of marketing and distribution for SEN Europe, described the launch on Freeview as a “historic” time for the UK television industry as a whole. “For the last 15 years, South Asian language channels were only available on what some describe as 'secondary' services such as satellite and cable,” Patel, said.

“With the launch of SONY SAB on digital terrestrial in the Manchester region, our viewers can access the channel wherever they are in their home, with only the most basic equipment required. This is just another step re-enforcing Sony Entertainment Networks' commitment to breaking barriers with true progression.”
