media and entertainment
industry is expected to touch
Rs.36,005 crore in 2015-16,
growing at an average 14% over
the next four years, said a
report released on Tuesday.
The southern industry’s size was
estimated at Rs.21,190 crore in
2011-12, according to a report
by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu
India Pvt. Ltd and the
Federation of Indian Chambers
of Commerce and Industry.
Television is its largest
component, accounting for about
58%. Fiction programmes are
the mainstay, but non-fiction
formats such as reality shows
are steadily gaining prominence,
according to the report.
South Indian television has seen
a spurt of non-fiction shows in
the past two years and
broadcasters are interested in
new formats, said Ashok
Vidyasagar, business director,
south, Big Synergy Media
Ltd, producer of shows such as
Kaun Banega Crorepati and part
of the Reliance Group.
The region’s total television
advertisement revenue is
estimated at Rs.3,610 crore for
2011-12, with Tamil Nadu
accounting for the largest share
at Rs.1,360 crore.
Print media is the second
largest contributor, accounting
for 29% of the southern media
industry. English national dailies
have started taking note of the
growing opportunities in south
India and are expanding
aggressively, the report said.
The south Indian film industry
is characterized by its fervent
fan base, the report said. Films
contributed Rs.2,340 crore to
the regional industry in
2011-12, and is forecast to grow
at 11%.
Radio is the smallest constituent
with a Rs.356 crore contribution,
but is expected to grow the
fastest at 22% over the next
four years.
