Fans will have to wait a little longer to see Andrew Garfield swing back into theaters as Spider-Man.
Sony Pictures announced Wednesday that “The Amazing Spider-Man 3″ has been delayed by two years. The film, which previously had been set to open June 2016, is now slotted for 2018.
However, “The Sinister Six,” the Drew Goddard-directed vehicle that will focus on a cadre of Spider-Man villains, is now set to open on Nov. 11, 2016.
Goddard, who won accolades for “Cabin in the Woods,” which he directed and co-wrote with Joss Whedon, is also serving as executive producer on another Marvel Comics-inspired project, the upcoming “Daredevil” series for Netflix, which will star Charlie Cox as the blind superhero.
Marc Webb is expected to remain in the director’s chair on “Amazing Spider-Man 3″ after his rousing success with 2012′s “The Amazing Spider-Man” and, to a lesser degree, the follow-up released in May, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” The 2014 sequel grossed $706 million worldwide, a bit less than the reboot’s $758 million, and was met with mixed reviews.

Webb came to the franchise as a somewhat unlikely choice — the respected indie director was previously best known for the Los Angeles-set “(500) Days of Summer,” starring Joseph-Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. But his original Marvel adaptation, which rebooted the franchise that Sam Raimi had so successfully helmed roughly a decade earlier, turned out to be a blockbuster hit that took in upward of $262 million at the domestic box office and also earned critical praise, thanks in part to the winning chemistry between English actor Garfield and his costar Emma Stone, who played Parker’s lady love Gwen Stacy.
The most recent film saw Garfield’s Peter Parker face off against several foes: Paul Giamatti as Aleksei Sytsevich, an Eastern Bloc criminal who becomes the Rhino, Dane DeHaan as Oscorp heir Harry Osborn, who suits up as the Green Goblin, and Jamie Foxx’s Electro, who begins the movie as the meek Oscorp employee Max Dillon and develops a masterful control of the power grid.
In other Sony news, the studio also set a date for “Uncharted,” the action pic based onthe top-selling PlayStation video game series. The feature directed by Seth Gordon will be releasedJune 10, 2016, and will follow the adventures of treasure hunter Nathan Drake. ‘Spider-Man’ spin-off ‘Sinister Six’ set for 2016, sequel pushed to 2018 | Hero Complex – movies, comics, pop culture &#...
