MUMBAI: Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) genre leader Star Plus is scaling new heights every week.

Boosted by the world TV premiere of Salman Khan starrer ‘Jai Ho’, the numero uno channel has added 43 million GVMs (gross TV Viewership in million) in the week ended 19 April to end the week with a historic score of 791 million GVMs.

Star Plus’ leading fiction show ‘Diya Aur Bati Hum’ has got 14.5 million TVM, highest ever for any fiction property.

Zee TV and Life OK were the only other GECs that witnessed gain in the week ended 19 April, as per TAM data for the Hindi-speaking markets (sourced from subscribers).

Here is how the Hindi GECs performed:

  1. Star Plus sits on top with 791 million GVMs, up from 748 million in the trailing week.
  2. Zee TV is No. 2 with 473 million, up from 464 million.
  3. Colors is at No. 3 with 433 million, down from 451 million.
  4. Life OK is at No. 4 with 389 million, up from 376 million.
  5. SAB is 5th with 266 million, down from 314 million.
  6. SET is No. 6 with 244 million, down from 308 million.

MUMBAI: Just when it seemed that a week-on-week viewership of 700 million GVM (gross TV viewership in million) would become a benchmark for Star Plus, the leader of the Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) genre has pulled off a coup by inching closer to a new feat – the 800 million mark. Buoyed by the performance of its fiction properties, the channel also got a big boost from the Salman Khan-starrer ‘Jai Ho’ which it premiered on 13 April. The film grossed 7,848 TVTs (TV viewership in thousand), or 3.71 TVR. Overall, it added 22.38 GRPs (gross rating points). Star Plus’ ‘Diya Aur Baati Hum’ also got the highest fiction ratings ever of 15,351 TVTs. In the week ended 19 April, Star Plus added 43 million GVMs to end the week with a high of 791 GVMs. Star Plus’ share in the genre (non-FTA GECs) grew to 30.2 per cent, the highest in the last three-and-a-half years. The channel is now leading in nine out of 11 slots on weekdays. Zee TV, the second most watched Hindi GEC, ended the week with 473 million GVMs, after adding 9 million GVMs. As per TAM data for Hindi-speaking markets (sourced from subscribers), Zee TV also gained on the back of its top-rated historical show ‘Jodha Akbar’. Colors, meanwhile, saw a further drop in viewership and ended the week with 433 million GVMs. Life OK was the only other channel to witness a gain on the back of its new top-rated fiction show ‘Tumhari Pakhi’. SAB and Sony Entertainment Television (SET) incurred losses. Hindi GEC category The Hindi GEC category witnessed total GVMs of 2,710 million compared to 2,790 million GVMs it had grabbed in the week-earlier period. Top 10 fiction shows Star Plus had seven shows (‘Diya Aur Baati Hum’, ‘Saathiya Saath Nibhana’, ‘Mahabharat’, ‘Yeh Rishta’, ‘Veera’, ‘Saraswatichandra’ and ‘Pyaar Ka Dard Hai’) and Zee TV two shows (‘Jodha Akbar’ and ‘Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke’) in the list of 10 most watched fiction shows. SAB’s ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma’ also featured in the top 10 list. No show from Colors, Life OK, or SET featured in the list. Top non-fiction/ weekend programmes Colors’ non-fiction show ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ continues to top the category with 10.02 million TVTs. This was followed by ‘Khataron Ke Khiladi’ with 8.53 million. Zee TV’s ‘DID Little Masters 3’ was at No. 3 with 4.8 million, followed by SET’s ‘CID’ with 4.4 million. Life OK’s ‘Savdhaan India’ was at No. 5 with 3.4 million.
