A detailed survey will be conducted to find out the number of cable television connections in Puducherry and in the adjoining areas as the data provided by cable operators was found to be incorrect, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said in the Assembly on 23 July 2012.
Intervening during question hour, he said operators claimed to have only around 67,000 connections in Puducherry. “We have more than 3 lakh ration card holders in Puducherry and by any estimate, the number provided by the cable operators cannot be true. We are exploring various options to conduct a survey to get the exact number of connections,” he said. Mr. Rangasamy urged the municipal staff to collect tax due to the civic bodies properly.
Earlier replying to a query raised by AIADMK’s Om Sakthi Sekar on cable television operation, Local Administration Minister N.G. Pannirselvam said that there are around 390 cable operators in the Puducherry region and the accrued tax arrears the operators owe to government comes to around Rs. 5 crore. The government collects 10 per cent as tax from the annual total collection the operators make, he said
Criticising the government for not streamlining cable operations, he said the arrears shown by the government was based on data given by the operators. The data was fudged and if a proper assessment was done the revenue generated as service tax from the sector would go up considerably, he said.
