-Thailand's sole private satellite operator Thaicom PCL (THCOM.TH) has chosen U.S.-based space transport company Space Exploration Technologies to launch its new Thaicom 6 telecommunications satellite into orbit in the second quarter of 2013.
Space Exploration's "launch vehicle is both cost-effective and best-matched to our requirements," Thaicom Chief Executive Arak Chonlatanon said in a statement Tuesday.
The Thaicom 6 satellite is designed to serve the growing satellite television market in South Asia and Southeast Asia, as well as southern Africa. The satellite will operate from 78.5 degrees east and carry 18 C-band and eight Ku-band transponders, the statement said.
Thaicom has mandated U.S.-based Orbital Sciences Corp. (ORB) to manufacture Thaicom 6. It plans to spend $160 million for the manufacture and the launch of the new satellite.
