The supply of free video content by broadcasters to over-the-top (OTT) players is worrying direct-to-home (DTH) operators.
This also leads to revenue cannibalisation and the playing field is loaded in favour of the OTT service providers as they are not subject to any taxation regime, some DTH companies feel. Videocon d2h has particularly objected to the OTT video platforms created by the broadcasters such as Hotstar and SonyLiv.
Citing the example of Star India, which pulled out all its content from YouTube ahead of the launch of Hotstar in February, the DTH operator said that the ad-supported service is an outlet for Star India’s content.
The app generated over 15 million downloads in a few weeks and back-to-back free live coverage of the cricket World Cup and IPL worked as a further catalyst. “Last year, Star India reached 30 million IPL viewers through Starsports.com, thus cannibalising revenue for DTH/cable operators,” Videocon d2h said.
Between individuals gunning for net neutrality, telecom operators fighting to save their revenues, and broadcaster Star India wanting telcos to share revenue with OTT players, Videocon d2h has particularly raised its concerns over the video-playing OTT services.
In its submission to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Videocon d2h has said that as a DTH platform, it is concerned with OTT services that play videos or live channels or content with a five-minute delay.
Videocon d2h stated that it is ‘shocking’ to know that all broadcasters have created their own OTT video platforms like Hotstar.com, Starsports.com, Sony Liv, etc. and are showing live signals or five-minute-delayed important sports content, including the World Cup and IPL.
“They do not charge anything to customers, whereas they charge premium amount to all DTH/cable platform for the same content,” it said.
Talking about the adverse impact on platform services like digital cable, multi-system operators (MSOs), DTH and IPTV providers, Videocon d2h mentioned that these providers are able to provide numerous channels and services to their subscribers across the country only after incurring huge costs towards content acquisition from broadcasters.
On revenue cannibalisation, the DTH operator said that paradoxically, broadcasters who sell their content to DTH players offer same content to the OTT players for free, “through their own OTT platform through the back door”
