MUMBAI: The second last week of the year saw a surge in the viewership of English entertainment channels, as per BARC data for the week ended 25 December.
Four out of the top five channels registered big gains, with AXN and Zee Café doubling their viewership.
While AXN continued to hold on to its pole position, Zee Café jumped from No. 5 in the last week to No. 2 in Week 51.
Last week’s No. 2 channel Star World was the only channel to register loss of viewership. The channel dropped to No. 4.
Comedy Central stayed put at the third spot, while Colors Infinity (SD) slipped to No. 5 despite some gain in viewership.
English movie channels
Unlike the English entertainment genre, the English movie genre did not see much gain and only Pix added some viewership and went up one spot to No. 3.
Movies Now and Star Movies remained No. 1 and No. 2 respectively, despite both seeing a drop in viewership.
HBO, which was No. 3 in the previous week, fell to the fifth place, giving way to Zee Studio at No. 4.
Top five movies
Movies Now had the distinction of airing four out of the five most-watched movies of the week. These included ‘The Karate Kid’, ‘Meet The Spartans’, ‘Kung Fu Hustle’ and ‘The Conjuring’.
‘Cowboys & Aliens’, which aired on Star Movies, was also among the week’s top movies.
Infotainment genre
Once again, there was no change in the pecking order of the infotainment channels. Discovery Channel continued to lead, followed by History TV18 at No. 2, NGC at No. 3, Animal Planet at No. 4 and Nat Geo Wild at No. 5.
Incidentally, only Nat Geo Wild lost some viewership in the genre.
Kids genre
The top order of the kids channels remained unchanged as Nick, Pogo and Cartoon Network held on to their pole positions.
Sister channels Disney Channel and Hungama swapped positions at No. 4 and 5.
Only Disney Channel gained viewership; the others witnessed a drop.
