MUMBAI: The soccer World Cup telecast has set new benchmarks in India with matches in the 9.30 pm slot rating well, growth in female viewership and the strategy of having Bengali feed bringing rich dividends for official broadcasters Sony Six and Sony Aath.
“The 9.30 pm matches in prime time have done well and it bodes well for the future of football. It goes on to show that if the sport is promoted well, it can get eyeballs,” says Sony Six business head Prasana Krishnan, while admitting that the late-night matches have not done as well.
“The tournament has already reached 50 million viewers even before the semi-finals. The regionalisation experiment of having a Bengali feed has worked very well. In fact, that is a trend that we will see more often in future,” adds Krishnan.
The most encouraging trend for the event was the fact that more female viewers have tuned in, with female viewers comprising 33 per cent of total viewers. Among male viewers, the youths comprised significant chunk of the viewers. This TG was also very active on social media discussing about the Fifa WC games.
The top 5 rated markets are the usual suspects West Bengal, Kerala, North East, Mumbai and Chennai, stated Krishnan. “These are the top five markets. However, viewership in other markets has also been encouraging,” avers Krishnan.
As per TAM data, the combined ratings for the 59 matches are 899 TVTs for CS15+ TG on All India basis. Individually, Sony Six, Sony Aath and Sony Pix have notched viewership of 605, 209 and 85 TVTs respectively. For the West Bengal market, Sony Six had garnered ratings of 218 TVTs with Sony Aath coming in second with 203 TVTs.
Sony Pix generated ratings of 27 TVTs to take the combined viewership on the three channels to 449 TVTs. The combined reach of the 59 matches is 50 million for CS4+yrs All India, with Sony Six, Sony Aath and Sony Pix reaching 43 million, 9.8 million and 5.3 million viewers respectively.
Talking about life after Fifa WC, Krishnan said that the channel has a roster of events lined up including the Caribbean Premier League, World Kabaddi League and Champions Tennis League.
The Uefa Euro qualifiers will also kick off in September. “We have a great roster of sporting properties lined up for the next few months—the Caribbean Premier League takes off today and later in the year we will be focusing on domestic sports with the World Kabaddi League and Champions Tennis League while NBA JAM is set to hit the ground in September 2014,” he states.
