9X Media gets licence to launch Bengali music channel
MUMBAI: New Silk Route-funded 9X Media has received its licence from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) to launch Bengali music channel 9X Bangla.
TelevisionPost.com was the first to report on the company’s plans to expand its bouquet by launching two regional music channels, 9X Bangla and 9X Odia.
In an earlier interaction, 9X Media MD Pradeep Guha had told TelevisionPost.com that the company had applied for licences and was awaiting government approval.
“We have applied for licences for two regional-language music channels. We are ready to launch from our side but haven’t got the licences yet,” Guha had said.
9X Media currently boasts a fleet of five channels including 9XM (Hindi), 9XO (English), 9X Jalwa (Classic), 9X Jhakaas (Marathi), and 9X Tashan (Punjabi).
The company plans to transfer its regional music channel 9X Jhakaas (Marathi) to its step-down subsidiary INX Music, which already owns and operates 9X Tashan (Punjabi).
9X Media owns close to 64 per cent stake in INX Music, while the remaining 36 per cent is held by Sandeep Bansal.
The government has deferred INX Music’s FIPB proposal to undertake the additional activity of broadcasting of a non-news and current affairs channel.
MIB’s nod to 4 new licences takes total TV channels in India to 830
Apart from 9X Bangla, the MIB granted three more licences to Ramoji Rao-promoted Eenadu Television Pvt Ltd for ETV Plus, ETV Life, and ETV Abhiruchi.
With four new licences, the number of permitted private satellite TV channels in India has risen to 830, as on 31 January 2015. While 405 are news and current affairs channels, the remaining 425 are non-news and current affairs channels.
