MUMBAI: In keeping with the festive mood of Diwali, English movie channels are dishing out a mix of family friendly fare along with thrillers and a bit more serious stuff to bolster viewing.
HBO, for instance, has a mix of titles some of which target the family in the key 9 pm slot. It airs ‘Step up Revolution’, the latest in the dance film franchise, on 7 November at 9 pm. In the movie, Emily arrives in Miami with aspirations to become a professional dancer. She sparks with Sean, the leader of a dance crew whose neighbourhood is threatened by Emily’s father’s development plans.
The thriller ‘Alex Cross’ airs on 8 November at 9 pm. This features the detective Alex Cross and is based on a James Patterson novel. In this outing, the detective is pushed to the brink of his moral and physical limits as he tangles with a ferociously skilled serial killer who specialises in torture and pain. The family friendly ‘Rise of the Guardians’ airs on 9 November at 9 pm.
This is a 2012 American 3D computer-animated fantasy film based on William Joyce’s ‘The Guardians of Childhood’ book series and ‘The Man in the Moon’ short film. When the evil spirit Pitch launches an assault on Earth, the “Immortal Guardians” team up to protect the innocence of children all around the world. Rounding things off is the critically acclaimed science fiction film ‘Looper’ on 10 November at 10 pm.
Pix, which recently underwent a change in its look and feel, is focusing on horror and thrillers in primetime. The creature feature ‘Lake Placid 3’ airs on 6 November at 9 pm. In the film crocodiles terrorise a small community. The action packed ‘Eagle Eye’ airs on 7 November at 9 pm. Bond and Spiderman take care of the weekend. ‘Spideman 2′ airs on Friday at 9 pm while ‘Skyfall’ gets a repeat on Saturday at the same time. However, it is not just about blockbusters and familiar titles.
Star Movies’ premiere this week is ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’ on 9 November at 9 pm. This is an independent film with a breakout turn from Elizabeth Olsen. She plays a young woman who unwittingly gets involved in a cult. Can it deliver better numbers compared to more mainstream fare on the other channels at that time is the question. A perennial ratings favourite, ‘The Mummy’ airs on 6 November at 9 pm. ‘Men In Black’ airs on 7 November at the same time while ‘Titanic’ airs on Friday. The family friendly ‘Up’ showcases on Sunday at the same time.
Movies Now’s schedule at 9 pm is action packed and this is the genre that especially plays well in its 15-34 TG. ‘Swordfish’, ‘Blade 2’ which is the second film in the vampire franchise and the underwater thriller ‘Into The Blue’ air from Wednesday-Friday at 9 pm. The weekend sees the family friendly ‘Baby’s Day Out’ airing on Saturday at the same time.
Zee Studio, which has defined primetime as being at 10:30 pm, will have a lot of thrillers, a dash of horror and a bit of serious fare. Van Damme’s ice hockey thriller ‘Sudden Death’ airs at 10:30 pm on 6 November. The gritty thriller ‘Miami Vice’ airs on 7 November and was directed by Michael Mann. It is horror time on 8 November with ‘The Grudge 3’ taking centre stage. The serious Oscar nominated ‘21 Grams’ with Sean Penn and Naomi Watts airs on Sunday 10 November at 10:30 pm.
WB, the library channel that relies on Warner’s content, offers a mix of action, horror and raunchy humour during primetime. ‘Snakes On A Plane’ airs on 6 November at 9 pm which is about passengers on an airline including Samuel L Jackson dealing with a bunch of venomous snakes. The Jackie Chan Chris Tucker action comedy ‘Rush Hour’ airs on 7 November at the same time followed by the raunchy comedy ‘The Hangover’ on Friday at 9 pm. The third Harry Potter film, ‘Harry Potter And The Priosner of Azkaban’, airs on Saturday. ‘300’ rounds off the lineup on Sunday at the same time.
