MUMBAI: Apple Inc is gearing up to launch its online TV service this fall. The company is in talks with programmers to offer a slimmed-down bundle of TV networks.
The service will have around 25 channels, anchored by broadcasters like ABC, CBS and Fox. It would be available on Apple devices such as Apple TV, iPhones, iPads and Apple TV set-top boxes.
Apple is aiming to price the new service at $30 to $40 a month. It plans to announce the service in June and launch it in September this year.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has been in talks with Walt Disney Co, CBS Corp and 21st Century Fox Inc among other media companies.
The idea is to offer consumers a “skinny” bundle with well-known channels like CBS, ESPN and FX, while leaving out the smaller networks in the standard cable TV package.
Channels under NBCUniversal’s umbrella like USA and Bravo are not expected to appear at launch due to disagreements between Apple and NBC’s parent company Comcast.
Last year, Apple was said to be discussing a set-top solution in partnership with Comcast, but negotiations supposedly broke down.
Several media companies are considering streaming-only services, or launching their own like HBO and CBS, to attract young people who do not subscribe to traditional pay TV packages.
In January, Dish Network Corp unveiled its video streaming service named Sling TV, which was targeted at younger consumers who ignore pricey cable and satellite subscriptions.
