KOLKATA: Local cable operators (LCOs) or multi-system operators (MSOs) in the city have been given the deadline of August 23, 2013, to submit filled-in consumer application forms to the central Subscriber Management System (SMS).
The consumer application forms - with personal details and channels of choice of cable TV subscribers - are a must for implementation of the Digital Addressable cable TV Systems (DAS).
All cable TV subscribers in the city will have to collect consumer application forms (CAF) from local cable operators (LCOs) or multi-system operators (MSOs) and furnish their personal details and channels of choice before August 23, 2013, or else they won't be able to see any channel after that.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has given the final deadline for the MSOs and the LCOs operating in Kolkata to send all the filled-in CAFs to the central Subscriber Management System (SMS), which is a must for implementation of Digital Addressable cable TV Systems (DAS) in the city.
The sectoral watchdog, led by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) principal adviser N Parameswaran, gave the ultimatum at a meeting in New Delhi on Friday.
"We had given them 24 hours to decide and inform us on a tentative date for implementation of DAS in Kolkata. In the meeting, they had proposed to us to fix the deadline on September 9. But we have conveyed to them that everything has to be completed by August 23 this year and the MSOs have agreed," Parameswaran told TOI.
Suresh Sethia, director of Siti Cable, said, "We, MSOs, don't have a choice now.
We have to try our level best to get things done before the deadline. It's good that we have got seven days more for sending the subscribers' choice of package till August 31 and to start billing from September 1."
Parameswaran on Thursday had told the mediapersons in Kolkata that MSOs or LCOs would have to either comply with the final deadline or face legal consequences, including criminal cases.
Recently, to get things done in Delhi, Trai has made criminal charges against 14 LCOs and one MSO.
According to Trai, the city is lagging far behind in sending customers' data to the SMS
Subscriber Management System (SMS) of DAS
- only 20% of the total subscribers' data received so far.
- against Delhi (97%), Mumbai (80%) and Chennai (79%) although the last deadline for DAS implementation for four metro cities was November 1, 2012
