MUMBAI: A Bangladeshi lawyer has filed a writ petition in the country’s Supreme Court to stop transmission of three Indian television channels in the country.

Petitioner Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan argued that Star Jalsha, Zee Bangla and Star Plus are having an adverse impact on social and cultural life of Bangladeshi people.

Their transmission, therefore, must stop.
Education of the students and regular functions of housewives are being hampered as they keep watching the programmes of the channels, he stated.
He also contended that the Bangladeshi television channels are not allowed to broadcast in India.

The petitioner pointed out that a Bangladeshi girl had reportedly committed suicide as she did not get ‘Pakhi’ dress allegedly influenced by drama serial ‘Bojhena Se Bojhena’ on Star Jalsha.

The HC is likely to hold the hearing on the petition on next Sunday, the SC lawyer told The Daily Star.
Bhuiyan had on 3 August slapped a legal notice on the government asking it to stop operation of three channels within 24 hours.
