INDORE: With passage of deadline for second phase of digitization of the country's television systems, analog cable connections are going off air from Monday night. Nearly six lakh homes with analog cable connection, will not be able to watch paid channels from Tuesday. However, they would continue to watch free to air channels.
According to government records, Indore has around 2.87 lakh cable connections out of which, nearly 1.77 lakh are yet to get set top boxes (STB) - mandatory for receiving digitized signals. Unofficial estimates state that the city has around 8 lakh cable connections and still 6 lakh people are yet to get STBs. These will be the people who will be deprived of watching paid cannels.
Member of the Cable Operators Association, Anil Chouhan said that in next few days the cable operators will stop airing analog connections. "They are hoping that people will start getting STBs at the earliest. We are gearing up to provide the STBs to the people and we had ordered 4 lakh STBs," said Chouhan. Meanwhile, DTH operators are hopeful of expanding their base. The domestic manufacturers of STBs are also betting high on business as the customs duty on imported STBs has been increased by 10% from existing 5%.
In Indore, there are nearly 50,000 DTH subscribers. Secretary of Indore Cable TV Operators' Association, Arun Dubey said, "We have placed orders for STB." In Bhopal, there are nearly four lakh cable subscribers and merely 1, 30,000 have been covered with STBs.
