RANCHI: All analogue channels went off air on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday by the order of the district administration. The last day to install set top boxes was April 8 after which the channels went off air phasewise, starting from regional channels to English channels and the the Hindi channels were disconnected in the last phase on Monday.
Subdivisional officer Ameet Kumar said, "The dates are not going to be extended. We already extended the dates once from March 31 to April 8 but people did not take it seriously. By March 31, only 80,000 of the 2.5 lakh cable subscribers installed set top boxes which increased to 90,000 by April 8. Since then, not more than 5,000 households got the set top boxes installed."
Now after the channels go off air, the cable operators are prepared to deal with the rush of customers seeking to install set top boxes.
Partha Chandra of Manthan Durang cable service providers, which covers 70% of the cable connections here, said: "There will be a rush to install set top boxes now as IPL matches are going on and nobody will want to miss it. We have sufficient set top boxes to cover all households. Also we have educated the cable operators of every area about the installation of these boxes, so no problem should arise."
According to Chandra, most of the people did not get set top boxes installed as they were expecting another extension.
"We approached many people but they refused to install set top boxes saying that they will get it installed only after the channels go off air. We are now expecting people to get the set top boxes installed as it is for their own benefit," he said.
