INDORE: Around 417 cable operators in the city are a harried lot these days. They feel sidelined by the government in the name of digitization. They also fear losing their business. The cable operators, that met here, on Friday evening to discuss the strategy, are likely to file a petition in the Indore bench of high court by early next week.

The cable operators feel that a manual operating system should also be present in set-top boxes (STB), as it will allow them to be in touch with their subscribers. All the STBs function by remote control connecting the subscriber directly with MSOs.

As per the ongoing nationwide digitation programme, the central government has made it mandatory that no TV sets can run without set-top-box (STB) in tier-II cities, which include Indore, Bhopal and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. The deadline of Mrch 31 is already over. Still, the district administration in Indore had, on the request of cable operators, extended the deadline until Friday. From Saturday, no TV sets will run in the city without STBs.

Talking to ToI, secretary of Cable Operators' Association (Indore), Arun Dubey, said, "We have been working since the inception of the cable TV revolution. Now, we are simply being asked to move out of the game. It's sheer injustice and we will take up the issue with the court."

A new body has been formed by the cable operators which will be known as Indore Cable Operators' Mahasangh, which will be filing the petition in the court shortly.

Commenting on it, spokesman of Cable TV Operators and MSOs Association Anand Gupta said, "I do agree that the cable operators will be at a loss and their income may also go down in future, but now it is too late."

Even district administration is interacting with MSOs only on the issue of STB, leaving aside cable operators. Talking to ToI, ADM, Alok Singh, said, "As on date, 2.34 lakh cable connections have already got STBs, out of a total connections amounting to 2.87 lakh in Indore. In case we find any TV connections sans STB, beyond may 31, then we will have to seize the office of the MSOs."
