MUMBAI: Within weeks of two direct-to-home (DTH) players Tata Sky and Videocon d2h announcing their plans to launch ultra high definition (UHD) 4K service in India, the world’s leading chipmaker Broadcom has demonstrated its readiness to service the market.

As a part of its three-city roadshow, Broadcom demonstrated a reference design set-top-box (STB) running on the latest System-on-Chip (SoC) – BCM7252 Ultra HD – that features a dual-core Brahma15 10000 DMIP CPU capable of delivering 4K resolution content at 60 frames-per-second.

As per Broadcom India managing director and head of business development South/South East Asia Rajiv Kapur, it is one of the first chips to support High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) compression format. While Broadcom has not commented on whether it is providing its hardware to the two DTH players, the fact is that it is the only player with HEVC technology, 10 bit video in 4k UHD format and 60 FPS.

The chipmaker, which has a diverse portfolio of products, is looking at big opportunities in set-top box (STB) and broadband categories. The company displayed its latest chips, which, it claims, reduces bandwidth usage by 50 per cent. Kapur told TelevisionPost.com that the company is in a “very good position to tap the Indian market” and a “majority of the tier 1 DTH and cable MSOs have used its products”.

“With the world adopting 4K technology, India will not be far behind. The operators who are installing future ready products, may adapt to this technology. India is warming up to 4K content. People are walking into showrooms and buying 4K televisions. Soon, they will want content,” Kapur added. Will the content be that readily available? “I don’t think 24-hour channels will be launched with 4K content, but it might be available via OTT platforms or via VoD (Video on Demand),” said Broadcom associate product line director, Broadband and Connectivity Group (BCG), Brett Tischler.

Both Tata Sky and Videocon d2h executives agree that while there is still some time for broadcasters to produce content in 4K, sports will be the biggest driver.

Apart from sports, movies will attract audiences. “Already Hollywood is shooting movies in movies in 4K,” Tischler said. In India, Broadcom offers the broadest portfolio of system-on-a-chip and embedded software solutions in the STB space.

The range of highly integrated chips provides solutions for the entire range of STBs for the cable as well as the DTH platforms. Broadcom also provides hybrid IP STB, over-the-top STB and DVB-T2 solutions.
