MUMBAI: DD Bharati is all set to launch a
new series entitled ‘Mangal Chowk’ featuring
folk singers from both sides of the border.
The programme will launch on 7 March 2015,
airing every Saturday at 9 pm, with a repeat
next day at 5 am and 1 pm.
The show will focus on various genres of
popular folk music, namely qawwalis,
bhajans in Sufi style and more. Folk singers
like Allah Jilai Bai, Vindhyavasini Devi,
Teejan Bai, Wadali Brothers and Reshma will
perform in the series.
Writer and author Yatinder Mishra said, “The
series is solely dedicated to Indian
traditional folk music exhibiting various
forms of Sufi singing that will surely bring
the masses close to the cultural heritage of
our country.”
Elaborating on the series, Thumri singer Dr
Kumud Diwan stated, “The series assumes a
special significance with a view to
promoting and propagating the Maand, Sufi
and Bhakti styles of singing, which is an
important part of Indian folk music and is
prevalent in different regions of India.”
‘Mangal Chowk’ will focus on various styles
of folk music such as ‘Margi’ (Bhakti
Sangeet) and ‘Desi Sangeet’.
