THANE: More than 56 per cent of the households having a television set in Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombvili have not switched over to the digital TV services despite the government's deadline of March 31.
Of the 9.97 lakh households having a television connection in these three key cities of Thane district just about 43 per cent of the households have switched from analogue to digital TV, it is learnt.
The Central government had made it mandatory for people to switch over to digital TV as there was large scale under reporting of the analogue connections by the local cable operators. The under reporting resulted in direct loss of revenue for the state and the national exchequer and the estimated loss in service tax was said to be around Rs 5,000 crore annually.
Thane city has recorded the highest switch over till date with as many as 73 per cent of the total 4.24 lakh households with TV set having either a Direct-To-Home connection or have installed a Set-Top-Box (STB). In fact, most Thaneites have shown their preference to DTH as more than 1.99 lakh or 47 per cent of the households with TV have subscribed to DTH while another 26 per cent or 1.13 lakh households have installed STBs.
In Navi Mumbai, the digitization plan has not been implemented as effectively as just about 40 per cent of the 2.59 lakh households with TV having secured a DTH or STB connection. The situation is unimpressive in the twin townships of Kalyan-Dombvili where of the total 3.13 lakh households with TV connections, just about 17 per cent have switched over to digital TV, it is learnt.
The switchover to digital services will help to get the accurate number of consumers and would plug the leak in revenue for the governments as also the television broadcaster who invests top dollar in securing entertainment and news content from private companies.
