Digitisation to be put on hold.
======================

New Delhi, 24 January: Admitting that the response to digitisation had not been very satisfying and there was general unhappiness among all stakeholders, including broadcasters, multi-system operators and cable TV operators, the government has decided to put on hold the remaining two phases till the views of all stakeholders are elicited, said the Minister for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari.

Speaking at the 5th CEOs Roundtable on Broadcasting organised by CII here today, the minister said: “If everyone is unhappy, then we should take a break and review... and sort out issues.”

Mr Tewari said around 800 TV channels in the country were reflective of “fragmentation” of the market.
The 415 news channels, the minister said, were dependent on advertisements for sustenance. Touching on the discourse on TV news channels, he said it was “corrosive”.

Now if someone says that this could be only for the Phase 3 and 4, yes! it is for Phase 3 and 4, but Digitisation in Chennai was a complete failure so there has to be a review to sort our the issues.

If this is true & if digitisation is put on hold then it seems Chennai would remain as it is.....

It seems everyones interests are now set in the current system. Many small channels would die after digitisation is complete & people forced to pay as per Trai's rates for costly pay channels.

As it is sucks friend. We are currently having CAS and its not certain who will be the MSO so purchasing a STB will go waste if another MSO (Arasu) takes control and we again have to pay Rs 1,500 to Arasu if they offer their STB.

Also as per SCV (current MSO) policy the Rs 1,300 that we pay for STB is just the connectivity charges so the STB is the property of SCV and could be taken back without a refund.

So to watch pay channels we have to risk Rs 1,300.

I think thats why STB portability is required. So even if you want to change operator, you can safely use same STB for other. Then you can invest in good quality STB with advanced features without fear.
Its high time Trai/Govt put some condition to operators for portability before continuing further digitisation.

NinadG bro, is it true that Digitization is put on hold as I doubt that. If so the due dates for the remaining 2 phases will be changed, or will they remain same. ???

Yes, there is a news that Digitization is put on hold.

If Digitization is put on hold then the due dates for the remaining 2 phases will become void and new dates have to be announced.

Well said. But for the STB portability to work the STB has to be the subscribers property and not the MSO's. So TRAI has to force MSO's to give those STB's to subscribers.

Well I think that the news is a hoax or just a fake rumour. Guys check this out.
