Infotainment broadcaster Discovery will launch over 130 hours of fresh programming in the third quarter of 2014. This will include 22 new series and four new seasons of returning series on the channel. Some of the shows are ‘Ice Col Gold’, ‘Naked Castaway’, ‘The Mind Control Freaks’ and ‘Deadly Dilemmas’. Each of these new series will showcase reality. ‘Ice Cold Gold’ showcases Greenland and focusses on ice cold miners following American speculators as they fight against the freezing elements, international miners and four short summer months. ‘Naked Castaway’ features Ed Stafford, the world-renowned survivalist and adventurer, tackling the challenges of any environment, with nothing except his camera. He finds everything he needs to not just survive but thrive in some of the world’s toughest environments. With no food, water or shelter watch him battling every day, living each moment as his last. With each episode he progresses to win over his own mind and controls the circumstances around him. In ‘Man Cheetah Wild’, Kim Wohlter spends much of his time living in the wild among a family of Cheetahs. To get close enough to them to film their daily lives and interactions, he had to keep a low profile and survive in the bush for weeks at a time. The Cheetahs have gotten used to him and he learned from them. We follow Kim and the cheetahs in this cross genre look at natural history meeting survival. Set to take television to the next level is ‘The Mind Control Freaks’. The series blurs the lines between science, psychology and trickery in an all-new format. The series hopes to demonstrate our vulnerability to those who are able to manipulate the mind and use psychological tricks and mind manipulation on the public to get them to do unexpected things. The quarter will also see a new series with Bear Grylls – ‘Bear Grylls Extreme Survival Caught On Camera’. He presents some of the most jaw-dropping footage of great escapes and near-death experiences in this new series. In each themed show, survivors share their stories, experts like Dave Salmoni, Gary Humphrey and Edd China provide survival tips and ‘how to’ advice – and Bear chooses his favourite clip…of the ultimate survivor. Meanwhile, ‘The Deadly Dilemma’ gives its viewers the chance to choose from a series of hypothetical scenarios that ultimately end in life or death situations, with real life case studies included in the show.
