When the government’s demonetisation drive has all but crippled the country’s economy for the time being, for direct-to-home (DTH) operator Dish TV it is business as usual, all thanks to its electronic payment system.

The DTH operator has claimed that it has seen over 65 lakh (6.5 million) unique transactions through e-payment until 23 November. The service tax (ST) component of the above transaction is approximately Rs 2,600 lakh. Dish TV has also incurred a collection cost of 4% on ST. The ST component is apart from state entertainment tax and the licence fee levied by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) on DTH operators.

The industry is looking forward to any possible incentive that may be under consideration by the Centre for e-payment transactions. As per industry estimates, turnover worth Rs 25,000 crore (Rs 250 billion) escapes tax compliance in the cable TV industry, resulting in the loss of Rs 8,000 crore of direct and indirect taxes to the national exchequer on an annual basis.

Demonetisation, timely implementation of digitisation and the rollout of GST are expected to bring in transparency and ensure a level playing field, Dish TV said.
