Hotstar is expected to lose 8 million to 10 million subscribers in its fiscal third quarter.

Star’s overall revenue for the fiscal year ending September 2023 is expected to drop around 20% to slightly less than $2 billion.

Star was in strain when it was under fox. When disney bid for 52 billion dollar, many market experts in usa said that it is too much. Later universal joined in the bid & price goes to 71 billion dollar. According to some markets experts at that time Disney paid around 26 billion more from than market value of fox.
Another problem is over the top spending of star on acquisition & promotion.
For example pathan tv premiere, I saw ads of this in youtube videos. It explains how much they spent on promotion. Yes pathan did register high trp but profit will be after adjusting promotional expense.
Indian media market will see many acquisition & merger in upcoming years

Star had approx $400M in EBITDA in 2018 when sold to Disney & never realized the 2020 EBITDA projection at the time of sale of $1B even with full IPL rights. With EBITDA now cut in half from 2018 figure it's clear that it's not just loss of streaming IPL rights that's the issue.

Earlier during ipl rights they told the same thing that ipl cricket rights are very expensive and no one can recover money.. so this is their ploy before going for any media rights..

This time they're really in a dire situation though.

If Zee backs out of that ICC TV deal then Disney should pack up from India unless they're ready to infuse capital knowing it will lead to loss.

Star Sports' mindless spending on sporting rights is the biggest reason for their collapse. They went all out for IPL, BCCI and ICC rights by quoting insane numbers which was not sustainable in the longer run. They themselves set inflated base price at the time of renewal.
What they need is to get back to the drawing board and revisit their strategy during ESPN-Star days. There was a time when they neither had BCCI rights nor ICC rights. Still they were one of the most sought sports channels because of the diversity they could should on just 2 of their channels. Now they just show cricket all day on 80% of their channels.

They themself destroyed Star World to make HotStar popular. Some years back, they stopped showing anything worthy at Star World, while HotStar had evey good TV series that they can play on Star World too.
At the end, they got to know that no one gives a F about all ABC/Fox library of TV series online.
