They should give users ability to choose lcn.

In analog days, we were able to do this using manual tuning on tv. In auto tuning, a channel may come on 159. But we could do manual tuning and put the channel on any number we want.

It was pretty difficult though. We had to do it for many channels.

Yes.Even For sony TV Where only 100 channels were There And for our local Cable which had 105 channels we could have done MFT(Manual Fine Tuning) to adjust any channel to channel number 0
I was a kid that time but I was master of doing that job
It was a Better feature for analog cable TV but Now in DTH of DCT(Digital cable TV) We Couldn't do that

Some STB do have a setting called 'LCN Off'. When you select this setting , channel numbers can be changed by user.

But problem is that EPG is arranged by LCN. So you will get wrong info in EPG. For example, if you select 101 for zee tv, but 101 is lcn of star plus. Then you will see star plus info on 101.

In the future, new system will come which will enable EPG of channel to be integrated into the feed of that channel.

Right now, EPG of all channels are in a separate feed. That is why LCN is needed. When new system comes, LCN will not be necessary and users will be able to assign channel numbers of their choice.

EPG is already integrated bhai, operators carry feed and epg of ch on same slot/frequency. Its actually stb feature to allocate lcn and right now subscribers cannot auto tune or receive chs and decide lcn, this feature is locked and inbuilt in firmware which only operator backend staff has access to. FTA boxes might give such option but current low quality dth boxes or even good quality ones have dedicated companies which customize features for ops hence open end system not possible. Also lower price boxes cannot support much features to keep cost less or have hardware limitations

On one frequency/transponder, they are carrying many channels. The EPG of all these channels is packed into a feed and put on that frequency. If you have an advanced STB that can analyze a transponder, you will see on each Tata Sky transponder, there will be data feeds like IMW16, IMW23 etc on each transponder. This data feed is actually the EPG of all channels on that transponder.

For example, on 11090 V, Tata Sky has channels like MN+ and MTV. At the end is data feed named "IMW28". This data feed has EPG of MN+, MTV and all other channels on that frequency.

Channel feed does not have data. Channel feed only has video and audio and maybe subtitles. Future system will combine video, audio, subtitles and data in one channel feed.

Buddy, i am also saying thaf Tata Sky carries ch video/audio/epg in one feed, please do not confuse this with broadcaster transmission which obviously will not have epg appearing in video but still on C band EPG is visible if scanned thru box.
Audio, video, guide r diff parameters and obviously appear separately on a frequency/slot, all i what to state is that this is not reason for not being able to chose LCN of our choice for a particular ch. U know when Tata Sky adds a new ch on a old slot then epg of earlier ch is visible sometimes incase not removed by them, this is bcoz slot has all the info has same is received by us

Bro I will show you an example

Let's say we have a frequency 11500 MHz Vertical coming from a satellite. It is divided into channel slots and data slots.
Slot 1: CNN video feed, audio feed1
Slot 2: AXN video feed, audio feed1, audio feed2
Slot 3: HBO video feed, audio feed1, audio feed2, subtitle feed1, subtitle feed2.
Slot 4: EPG of Slot 1, Slot 2 and Slot 3

Now when this frequency is scanned by STB, it will first check Slot 4. Slot 4 will also have LCNs assigned to the channels by the operator. It may contain data like this: [110:1, 111:2 112:3]. This will make the STB store CNN in 110, AXN in 111 and HBO in 112.

If we use an STB with 'LCN Off' setting, STB will not store the channels in the correct LCN. User puts HBO in 110. But when he presses the info button, it will show info of CNN because STB uses Slot 4 to pull the info.

Now let's say he stores HBO in 200. Now when he pressed info button, it will show "info not available". Because 200 is not in Slot 4 data.

Buddy, EPG is not carried on a diff slot. The slot which contains audio, video also contains prog guide for said ch. If someday in future ops think about enabling lcn self select option on boxes then only scenario u r pointing to would b reality. Right now even broadcasters have no option but to imprint subtitles in feed rather than giving subscribers option to switch it on or off as most operators boxes do not have this feature. Star World Premiere tried to implement this but failed, read this
Subtitles soon on Star World Premiere HD

Also currently as u can see if one selects fav ch say on 903 on tata sky then correct epg is displayed so it is not the case that some empty lcn will not show correct prog info if some ch assigned to it by subscribers.

You are wrong bro. AV slot does not have EPG data. You can check any satellite tracking site. Data slots are separate.

Current broadcasting system is like this (DVB-S2):
Frequency: 11500 MHz Vertical
Slot 1: CNN video feed, audio feed1
Slot 2: AXN video feed, audio feed1, audio feed2
Slot 3: HBO video feed, audio feed1, audio feed2, subtitle feed1, subtitle feed2.
Slot 4: EPG of Slot 1, Slot 2 and Slot 3

Future system (maybe DVB-S3):
Frequency 11500 MHz Vertical:
Slot 1: CNN video feed, audio feed1, EPG
Slot 2: AXN video feed, audio feed1, audio feed2, EPG
Slot 3: HBO video feed, audio feed1, audio feed2, subtitle feed1, subtitle feed2, EPG

Now you will be able to put any slot on any LCN you want. There won't be any mix-up.
