Seeking Help DTH Settop Box & Television Safety during Lightning

I recently purchased sun direct hd connection.When I asked the technician,he told me that for safety to release the power from socket during lightning and no need to detach the cable from settop box and I did so.But in last lightning,my HDMI mode in TV stopped working with no issues in Settop box and now I am working in AV mode with less clarity and no use of HD Facility.What is the actual issue and what will be the expense to resolve the HDMI Issue? What all precautions should we take during lightning? Please provide your valuable comments.
