TV18-owned ETV News Network has set its eyes on the untapped Punjab market. Even as it is launching a Hindi news channel for Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, the company also plans to launch a separate Punjabi news channel in future to serve that market. ETV will be officially launching its eighth news channel ETV Haryana/Himachal tomorrow in Gurgaon. The news network has launched a common channel for both the states as Hindi is their common language. “We will be launching a Punjabi channel later. It will be a separate channel because the language spoken by most of the people is Punjabi. We have a common channel for both the states of Haryana and Himachal as Hindi is the main language and geographically also they are in the same region,” ETV News Network group editor Rajesh Raina told TelevisionPost.com. Raina said that the full transmission of ETV News Haryana/Himachal will start from 28 March. The network had recently launched ETV News Bangla and ETV News Kannada. After ETV News Haryana/Himachal Pradesh, the network will launch two more news channels for Gujarat and Odisha. ETV Gujarati will be launched on 30 April while ETV Oriya will launch on 31 July. Queried about investment plans for the channel, Raina said, “We are equipping the channel with latest technology available in the industry. We will be spending about Rs 15 crore ( Rs 150 million) on technology upgradation.” He, however, did not disclose other investment figures. Raina said that the channel should break even in two years. According to Raina, there is a gap in the market in both the states that ETV News Haryana/Himachal will try to fill. “We will be having our correspondents in each and every assembly constituency. That way, it would be the voice of the people in the true sense,” he said. ETV News Haryana/Himachal will have two editors, one for Haryana and one for Himachal. Balwant Takshak is the editor for Haryana while Shashi Bhushan will lead the Himachal newsroom. Narendra Bhaskar is the marketing head for the channel. ETV News Haryana/Himachal will have two main bureaus in Chandigarh and Shimla, in addition to seven bureaus in both the states. “We will have around 250 employees, 50 stringers and 100 freelancers for this channel,” revealed Raina. The channel is being marketed through ETV network channels, digital, FM radio and hoardings.
