Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting (MoS I&B) Rajyavardhan Rathore has said that the government has done away with the requirement of taking security clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for existing broadcasters.

“The MHA security clearance will not be required for existing broadcasters,” Rathore told the media on the sidelines of ‘Make in India’ week here, highlighting the efforts of the government to promote ease of doing business.

As reported earlier by TelevisionPost.com, the MHA had written to the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) that there was no requirement for existing broadcasters to take fresh security clearance for launching new channels provided the applicant company’s security clearance was within the validity period of 10 years.

The IBF had written to the MHA seeking clarity on the validity of security clearance, security clearance for additional channels, disposal of applications in a timely manner and renewal of permission.

However, security clearance from the MHA is a prerequisite for grant of permission to TV channels. Rathore also said that the government has taken many decisions to ease the regulatory framework.

This includes revamp of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC); increasing FDI limit; single window for film shooting and production; funding movies that are selected for international awards; special visas for overseas filmmakers visiting India to see shooting locations; and the creation of a special platform for documentaries.
