The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has earned Rs 74.1 million in processing fee till 27 January 2015 from multi-system operators (MSOs) in the last four financial years, Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said in Lok Sabha in reply to a question.
Rathore informed that the government has earned processing fee of Rs 300,000 in 2011–12, Rs 18 million in 2012–13, Rs 7.9 million in 2013–14, and Rs 47.9 million in 2014–15 up to 27 January 2015.
He further stated that the ministry collects Rs 100,000 from each applicant as processing fee at the time of submission of application for registration of MSOs for providing digital addressable cable TV service.
With regard to the revenue earned by the state governments from cable TV service providers, the minister said that some of the states have levied entertainment tax on cable services.
This is collected directly by the state governments concerned, the minister said. In addition, cable operators are also required to pay service tax and any other applicable taxes to the central government.
The I&B ministry does not maintain any information relating to collection of these taxes, he stated. As on 10 April 2015, the MIB has issued 169 permanent MSOs licences
