To be future proof all DTH players should start ordering H.265/HEVC codec supported set top boxes and distribute it to new customers and also to old customers when they ask for replacement so that in the next 3 years they can broadcast the channels using HEVC.

The H.265/HEVC uses half the bandwidth which the current H.264/MPEG4 codec uses. So in short with same tp space we can get double the amount of HD and SD channels. Cost effective for DTH players and will help drive the pack prices low. H.265 is an approved standard for UHD/4K broadcast as well.

The operator who starts first will be at an advantageous position else like in case of Dish Tv and Tata sky, if they stretch it too late they might have to go for a replacement drive like in case of MPEG2 to MPEG4 which might be expensive. The price of HD set top boxes currently is around $24 and H.265 boxes will cost $30.

With the savings in the bandwidth there is a possibility that by 2020 we might phase out SD broadcast all together, as all television sets in the market will be full HD compatible. Today we get 20 inch full HD tvs at Rs 10,000 which is affordable for most people. We expect the prices to reach Rs 5,000 for 20 inch full HD tvs by 2020.

Nice Predictions, but in real life now a days we can't expect from these advanced boxes from all top Indian dth players, but who newly enters into dth platform they can easily implement this, and they can benefit these advanced technology.

Thank you

These boxes also support the old MPEG4 format so there is no problem in backward compatibility. Plus there will not be any new DTH player coming to Indian market as it is over crowded with 6 pvt players. Our market currently can only support 4 players thats why all DTH players are suffering losses due to hyper competition. In future we are expecting consolidation and expect at least one player Reliance to sell its DTH arm or merge it with Sun. I am quite positive about it and expect DTH players to adopt new technology rather than waiting for satellite launches.

Totally agree with you ..:k
If a DTH wants to be future proof it must do it from now onwards..But it might be to early currently.:)
It will not just save bandwidth for HD or 4K channels but will also be useful for SD transmission..
After the use of h265 current mpeg4 h264 compatible stb will be like today's mpeg2 boxes..Though it will take few more years.:u

yup and I am not saying to start broadcast now but start distributing boxes to new customers and old customers asking for replacement due to damage so that in 3 years time you can directly switch to broadcast using that codec as most of your customers will already be having hevc boxes
