Lord Krishna was born in Rohini Nakshatra in the 5th Hindu month i.e. Shravana month. This day is Janmashtami. Gokulashtami in South we celebrate on the 8th day after Avittam/Dhanishtha nakshatra. Ashtami is 8th thithi after poornima. These two doesn't come on same day most of the time. Yesterday was Gokulashtami and today is Janmashtami i.e janma nakshatra. Both celebrates the same thing though, lord Krishna's birth. It seems the term Janmashtami is used mostly in North India and Gokulashtami or Krishna Jayanti in South India. Can anyone explain?
