Breaking Hindi GEC gear up for 2018 with new show launches

The Hindi GEC genre will also witness the entry of another competitor Discovery Jeet. The male-skewed GEC is expected to launch at the beginning of 2018. At last count, seven Hindi GECs including Discovery Jeet are expected to launch a total of 22 new shows. The content mix includes fiction as well as non-fiction and spans various genres.
Discovery Jeet
The channel, which will have 200 hours of original content, has lined-up shows like ‘Swami Baba Ramdev: The Untold Story’, ‘Saragarhi – India’s Bravest Day’, ‘Gabru: The Birth of Hip Hop’, ‘Gangs of Mumbai’, ‘Anjaan’, ‘Khan No 1’, ‘Mere Papa Hero Hiralal’ and ‘Shaadi Jasoos’. The channel will be launched with the biopic series of ‘Baba Ramdev entitled ‘Swami Baba Ramdev: The Untold Story’. The 65-episode scripted biopic series is produced by Ajay Devgn Productions and Watergate Productions. ‘Saragarhi – India’s Bravest Day’ is a large-scale scripted action drama series produced by Contiloe Pictures and features Mohit Raina, Sameeksha and Mukul Dev in lead roles. Produced by Still and Still Media Collective, ‘Gabru: The Birth of Hip Hop’ will revolve around three hip-hop singers. It will star Amol Parashar as MC Money, Harleen Sethi as Queen B and Chaitanya Sharma as Surf. ‘Anjaan’, which is being produced by Lotus Talkies, will be a crime show with a horror twist. ‘Khan No.1’ is being produced by Rohan Sippy under the banner Black Swan. Ashvini Yardi is producing an emotional saga ‘Mere Papa Hero Hiralal’ under her banner Vini Yard Films. ‘Shaadi Jasoos’ is produced by DJ’s A Creative Unit and is expected to feature Sidharth Bhardwaj, Akash Pratap Singh, newbies Samar Vermani and Srishti Ganguli Rindani in the lead role. ‘Gangs of Mumbai’ is a scripted series on the thriving underworld in India.
Colors
The channel will have three new show launches including ‘The Rising Star’ season 2, ‘Bepanhaa’ and ‘Belan Wali Bahu’ which will be launched in early 2018. The channel will bring back the second season of its first interactive singing reality show ‘Rising Star’. Produced by Optimystic Entertainment India, the show will be judged by Shankar Mahadevan, Monali Thakur, and Diljit Dosanjh. The auditions for the show have already started. ‘Bepanhaa’ is a romantic fictional drama, produced by Cinevistaas and features popular TV actors Jennifer Winget and Harshad Chopda in lead roles along with Sehban Azim, Namita Dubey, and Parineeta Borthakur. On the other hand, ‘Belan Wali Bahu’ is a comedy-drama produced by Shoonya Productions and features Krystle D’Souzaa and Dheeraj Sarna in the main lead.
Zee TV
The channel will be launching three new shows ‘Kalire’, ‘Aapke Aa Jaane Se’ and ‘Ishq Pakeezah’ (tentative title) complementing its new brand positioning Aaj Likhenge Kal. ‘Kalire’ is produced under the banner of Tringle Films and will feature Arjit Taneja and Aditi Sharma in the lead role. ‘Aapke Aa Jane Se’ will be produced under the banner of Bodhi Tree Multimedia. The show will feature Kinshuk and Suhasi Dhami in the lead role. The third show, which is tentatively titled ‘Ishq Pakeezah’, is being produced by Creative Eye and features Adnan Khan and Kanika Mann in the lead roles along with Gunn Kansara and Vinay Jain.
Sony Entertainment Television (SET)
SET will unveil its new brand SET Originals with the premiere of its show ‘Prithvi Vallabh’ by the end of January 2018. Produced by Anirudh Pathak of Writers’ Galaxy, ‘Prithvi Vallabh’ is a big budget historical drama featuring Ashish Sharma as Prithvi, Sonarika Bhadoria as Mrinal, Pawan Chopra as Singhdant, Shalini Kapoor as Rajmata, Alefia Kapadia as Savita, Jitin Gulati as Tailap, Piyali Munshi as Jakkala, Surendra Pal as Vinayaditya, amongst the others. The channel is also bringing back two of its popular non-fiction show – Salman Khan’s ‘Dus Ka Dum’ and ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ in the new season, next year. Produced by Big Synergy, Dus Ka Dum will return in its third season, almost after eight years. Whereas, The Kapil Sharma Show will also be back in its third season after going on a sabbatical in August 2017.
Star Plus
The channel will be launching its big budget reality show ‘India’s Next Superstar’ from 6 January 2018. The reality show will replace channel’s ongoing comedy show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, every weekend. Produced by Dharma Productions, the talent reality show will bring together Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty on the judge’s panel. After almost 15 years, Star Plus is bringing back its popular comedy fiction show ‘Khichdi’ in the new season. The sequel titled ‘Instant Khichdi’ is being produced by Hats Off Productions. The original cast, including Anang Desai, Rajeev Mehta, Supriya Pathak, Vandana Pathak and Jamnadas Majethia, who is the producer of the show along with Aatish Kapadia, will reprise their roles and will be joined by a couple of new artists like Renuka Shahane.
Star Bharat
The channel will kick-off the New Year with the launch of a new fiction show ‘Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki’ which will air from 1 January 2018 at 9.30 pm, every Monday- Saturday. The show will be a remake of Star Jalsha’s popular show ‘Bhojo Gobindo,’ created by Blues Production. The show features Vishal Vashittha, Dipankar De and Shweta Bhattacharya in the lead role.
Sony SAB
The channel dedicated to comedy genre will launch a new show ‘Jijaji Chhath Per Hain’ early next year. The show produced by Edit II Productions will feature Hiba Nawab and Nikhil Khurana as the lead protagonists
