If you already have Android/Google TV, will you still go for Android STB?

Hi All,

I had non-smart TV few years back and purchasing Android based Airtel X-Stream was a super helpful.
I do not understand why these DTH service providers are pushing for Android based STB when almost all TVs in market today are smart TVs.

Now I upgraded to latest Google QLED TV with Android 14. What is the point in having another old version of Android in set top box !
Only thing that helps is using one remote of STB for all use, but you will loose new smart features of TVs.

I feel it is high time for TRAI to push for CI slot.

What is your set up at home.
If you suggest non-smart STB, which one is the best?

Present TVs doesn't have satellite frequency tuner or cable tv frequency tuner, so STB required to view even FTA channels on DD Free dish. Android 4k STB with satellite tuner required to watch satellite 4k channels like STAR 4k. No STB required if you have latest smart tv and not interested in DTH/Cable TV.

Yes I wish there was one app to watch all Live TV so that it would be like digital DTH.
Something like Watcho but watcho is not having all channels like Viamcom18, SunNxt.

It is annoying to switch between apps.
For example I want to switch to Live Cricket just to check score in between. Switching in DTH/Cable is so easy.

Samsung released support for DishTV/D2H without STB recently. Earlier they supported Airtel DTH via CI Slot but discontinued it.
My Previous TV was Philips supporting d2H in CI slot. It was so convenient.

Technology wise TV manufacturers and DTH providers are not one side, so we need STBs till then. so let us discuss iptv in apps without STB @ OTF.

There current target is freedish audience who do not require android based set top boxes. Hence, the prices of boxes have gone down. While they also offer good discounts on annual and semi annual packs.

Hi Guys,

Finally I got solution for my requirement.

Thanks to JIO

I got JIO Fiber and I got a wireless set top box with it which I connected to non-smart TV in my parents room.
I installed Jio TV+ app on Smart Android TV in living room to watch all TV channels.

Pros -
  1. Cheapest solution - With 12 months recharge, got 1 month free also.
  2. Most OTT subscriptions also included - Jio Cinema, Zee5, SonyLiv, disney Hotstar, sunNxt, 2 Yrs Amazon Prime lite
  3. One 4k wireless set top box for free,
  4. Installed JIO TV+ and watch most channels on Living room smart TV
  5. Only one cable - Fiber cable coming inside house, rest are all connected wirelessly.
  6. In case of Airfiber, FIber cable also can be elminated. Only power cables are in use.
  7. No Satellite dish installation,
  8. Works smoothly in all weather conditions
Cons -
  1. Jio TV+ app connects other OTT apps to play Live TV, for example to watch Zee network, it open Zee5, for Sun Network channel, it opens SunNxt,
  2. It is difficult for old people to use this.
  3. It is difficult switch between channels quickly
  4. There is no recording option.
  5. Picture and Sound quality is average.

Airtel is launching iptv to its fiber/airfiber users soon, then we can play Star, Zee, Sun channels directly without going to thier apps like DTH.
Here you can see about this.

Since this thread is more about television channels via internet/OTT medium and as previously @Ashok Varma bro advised the OP that we discuss this type of contents on our OnlyTech forums.

@Shrihara bro, it would be highly appreciated, if you can re-post your JioFiber experience on our OnlyTech forums -> Reliance JioFiber section.

I am closing this thread now as it's served the purpose.
