Any reason behind this decision? Freeing up server space? I'm asking this because I have not seen such kind of decision at any other forum I have visited in past.

to reduce the database size and hence for a smoother operation... in other forums either their db may not be that big due to limited activity or they might have any automatic pruning system which does the work or may not inform this well in advance as we do...
