In a strong quarter for direct-to-home (DTH) operators, Reliance Digital TV has made no progress. This indicates that Reliance Communications’ DTH arm will have to carry out major initiatives if it wants to acquire subscribers and stay in competition with its peers.
Reliance Digital TV added just 20,000 subscribers in the fiscal first quarter, going back to its old pace after speeding up in the preceding quarter. The total subscriber base stood at 4.82 million subscribers compared to 4.8 million in the fourth quarter of the previous fiscal when it had added 100,000 subscribers. Prior to that, the DTH operator’s subscriber growth had remained flat at 4.7 million for two straight quarters.
Comparably, Dish TV added 332,000 net subscribers in the June quarter to take its net subscriber base to 11.7 million. Similarly, Airtel Digital TV added 376,000 subscribers during the quarter under review, taking its total net subscriber base to 9.4 million.
The Anil Ambani-promoted company has been on the lookout for buyers for quite some time. It was in merger talks with Sun Group-owned Sun Direct. However, the negotiations failed due to differences in valuation.
Reliance Digital TV claimed that its set-top box (STB) failure rate is 0.57 per cent, which is among the best internationally and by far the best in India.
The DTH company offers a full combo of standard definition, high definition and high definition DVR STBs. It is available at more than 37,000 outlets across 8,350 cities in the country.
Reliance Digital TV said it has launched India’s first HD-cum advanced digital video recorder (HD DVR), offering 200 hours of recording, trick play functions and universal remote for operating three devices.
According to TRAI, the six private DTH operators have 64.82 million subscribers for the quarter ended 31 March 2014, with as many as 27.63 million inactive subscribers.
