MUMBAI: The total number of inactive
direct-to-home (DTH) subscribers during
July–September jumped 5.99 per cent
quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) to 31.2 million,
constituting 44.36 per cent of the total DTH
subscriber base.
Comparably, the inactive subscriber base
was 29.33 million during the April–June
quarter, comprising 43.41 per cent of the
total subscriber base.
As per available churn data, Dish TV had
managed to maintain churn at 0.7 per cent
per month during the quarter, which is the
same as the trailing quarter. On the other
hand, Airtel Digital TV’s monthly churn rate
had jumped to 1.1 per cent from 0.6 per cent
in the previous quarter.
According to the Telecom Regulatory
Authority of India’s (TRAI) quarterly
performance report on the DTH sector,
India’s six DTH operators added 2.76 million
subscribers during the quarter. The DTH
operators had added 2.75 million during the
trailing quarter.
Overall, the total number of registered
subscriber base grew 3.92 per cent to touch
70.33 million compared to 67.57 million in
the trailing quarter.
Dish TV and Bharti Airtel had respectively
added 378,000 and 151,000 net subscribers
during the quarter ended 30 September. The
subscriber addition numbers of other DTH
players are not in the public domain.
The active subscriber base during the
quarter increased 2.27 per cent to 39.13
million from 38.24 million.
Apart from Doordarshan’s free DTH service
Freedish, there are six private DTH
operators, namely Airtel Digital TV, Dish TV,
Tata Sky, Reliance Digital TV, Sun Direct and
Videocon d2h.
