News9, promoted by Associated Broadcasting
Company (ABCL), has become the second-most watched
English news channel in India, as per BARC data for the
week ended 28 August.
Surprisingly, News9, which does not have presence
outside Karnataka, raced ahead of national channels like
India Today TV, which has anchors like Rajdeep Sardesai
and Rahul Kanwal; NDTV 24X7, which has Barkha Dutt and
Vikram Chandra; and channels like CNN IBN and NewsX.
News9 is positioned as an English news channel for
Karnataka audiences.
As per data available on BARC India website for Week 34,
Times Now is the English news genre leader with weekly
ratings of 431 (in thousand), followed by News9 (208
thousand).
At the third place is India Today Television with 160
thousand.
When contacted, a senior official of News9 said that the
channel is “very popular in Bengaluru and Karnataka” and
that during the week under review, it had covered the
Bengaluru Civic Corporation elections (Bruhat Bengaluru
Mahanagara Palike), “which could have triggered the hike”.
the Hindi news genre, Aaj Tak maintained its lead, while
ABP News once again fell to No. 3, resulting in India TV
getting the second spot.
English business news Remained unchanged
The Hindi business news genre, which has only two
channels, was the only genre where all the channels saw
an increase in viewership.
CNBC Awaaz continued to lead the genre, followed by Zee
Business.
