Karnataka Tourism launches Jungle Camps and Trails programme

Karnataka Tourism has launched a new programme aimed at budget tourists – Jungle Camps and Trails (JCT) - in 10 locations in the southern part of the state. The new programme complements the government-run initiative, the Jungle Lodges and Resorts programme which taps top-end Eco-Tourists to the southern state.
“Jungle Camps and Trails is our new initiative offering varied Eco-Tourism destinations in the bewitching and picturesque Western Ghats in Southern Karnataka,” said K Vishwanatha Reddy, Director, Department of Tourism, Government of Karnataka. The programme is targeted at low budget tourists and includes places such as isolated beaches, dense tropical forests, hill stations, rivers and wildlife sanctuaries as well as the popular elephant camp.
Reddy said that the tourism department has spent over Rs 10 crore to build infrastructure and facilities for the tourists at the locations. The state government has allotted a total of Rs 248 crore to promote tourism in the state for fiscal 2011-2012, according to a report in www.mydigitalfc.com.
“We are charging just Rs 1,000 per person per night and two days,” informed M Yuvaraj, Assistant General Manager, Jungle Lodges and Resorts. The fee is inclusive of breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea, safari, trekking, trailing and boating charges.
The JCT programme includes the Sakrebyle Elephant camp that is nestled in Ashwini Vana, an herbal garden located in Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctury about 16 km from Shimoga railway station. “Here, tourists can play with the captive elephants, bathe them and indulge in eco-activities like herbal garden tours, bird watching, trekking and boating,” Reddy added.
Castle Rock adventure camp, bordering Goa has treks along the railway track to Kuveshi point and Dudhsagar falls. Bhagawati herbal camp in Kudremukh National Park in the Aroli Gangamoola Range of Western Ghats is one of the 25 biological hot-spots identified for biodiversity conservation in the world. “This area is lush with green shoal forests that conceal untamed streams and grassy slopes,” Yuvaraj informed.
