Viacom18 is expanding its high-definition (HD) offering with the launch of MTV HD+, an extension of its youth and music channel MTV.

Priced at Rs 25 on reference interconnect offer (RIO), the channel is likely to launch on 28 February.

It is not clear if MTV HD+ will be a mirror of MTV or have unique content as well.

The channel will be available for subscription on free preview basis until 31 March. However, availability of this channel on free preview basis will strictly be subject to the distribution platform complying in full with the packaging obligation.

Under the packaging obligation, the channel will have to be made available to all subscribers of Hindi-language HD channel package. In case any platform’s EPG sub-classifies music genre into ‘English Music’ and ‘Hindi Music’, then MTV HD+ will have to be placed at No. 2 LCN position in the Hindi music category HD channels. However, if the EPG does not sub-classify the music genre, then this channel will be placed at No. 3 LCN position in music genre HD channel.

Targeted at youth, MTV is known for creating top-rated format shows such as ‘MTV Roadies’, ‘MTV Splitsvilla’, ‘Coke Studio@MTV’, ‘MTV Unplugged’ and fiction series such as ‘MTV Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan’ and ‘MTV Warrior High’.

In 2015, MTV also launched its first ever café in the world, FLYP@MTV, at New Delhi in India. MTV has several on-ground properties to its credit such as MTV Video Music Awards and MTV Bollyland.

In October 2016, Viacom18 had launched its youth-oriented Hindi music channel MTV Beats in SD and HD. The launch of MTV HD+ will take the total MTV-branded youth and music channel count to four including MTV, MTV HD+, MTV Beats and MTV Beats HD.

On the other hand, the total HD channel count of the network will increase to 10. The HD channels currently include Colors HD, Colors Infinity HD, Vh1 HD, Comedy Central HD, Nick HD+, Colors Marathi HD, Colors Bangla HD, Colors Kannada HD and MTV Beats HD.
