MUMBAI: In order to expand its footprint in the country, Infotainment and lifestyle broadcaster National Geographic Network India is planning to launch an Indian feed of its channel Nat Geo Wild.
The move is expected sometime in the near future. Currently, the international feed of Nat Geo Wild airs in the country. This feed is programmed out of Hong Kong.
Speaking to TelevisionPost.com, NGC Network India and Fox International Channels MD Keertan Adyanthaya said, “Currently, Nat Geo Wild is among the best distributed channels in the infotainment genre and leading the pack of entertainment and news channels with its wide-spread reach. The launch of the Indian feed is in the pipeline but we would like to talk about it more closer to its launch.”
Asked if the aim of launching a local version of Nat Geo Wild was to compete better with Animal Planet, Adyanthaya said that the broadcaster’s aim has always been to launch world-class products that are tailored to meet the Indian preferences.
“With the launch of NG Wild, we shall continue with our brand promise.”
Nat Geo Wild competes directly with archrival Discovery’s Animal Planet which also focuses on the animal kingdom.
Adyanthaya noted that the flagship channel NGC’s viewership in the third and fourth phases is very strong because of availability in local languages. “The channel is available to viewers in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and Telugu, which makes our presence very strong.”
For the record, Nat Geo Wild will be the third channel from the National Geographic Networks to have an India feed. The others are the flagship channel NGC and the lifestyle channel Fox Life. The other channels, such as Nat Geo Music, Nat Geo People (which launched in India earlier this year to replace Nat Geo Adventure) and Baby TV, all have an international feed.
Like Nat Geo Wild, Nat Geo People is also programmed from Hong Kong. Baby TV is programmed from London, while Nat Geo Music is done from Italy.
Adyanthaya noted that this year subscription revenue for the network has seen an encouraging growth with the move to digital addressable system (DAS). “However, the government’s directive to push the launch of DAS Phases III and IV will slow down the subscription growth rate for all the channels in the industry,” he said.
