The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has found no violation of the Competition Act by Sun Direct TV, the DTH arm of Sun group. CNBC-TV18's Malvika Jain reports on what the CCI order means to Sun Direct TV.
Once Jayalalitha became the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, she talked about nationalising cable TV. She also spoke about how the Marans and their company Sun TV have a dominant position.
It's a good beginning of the month for the Marans. After a near clean chit by the CBI yesterday, the CCI today said that the relevant market has to be the overall DTH operations in India as far as the DTH business is concerned and cannot be constrained to the TV distribution business in Chennai. With that perspective in mind, CCI order said that it cannot be said that Sun Direct TV has a dominant position or it is indulging in predatory pricing.
The complainants in this case was that a cable operating company had said that Sun Direct TV has been offering set top boxes at subsidised rates and charging a subscription fee, lower than the basic rates for the channels determined by the TRAI in 2008.
The CCI investigation said that it agrees with the DGs report, which says that there is no violation of the competition act by Sun Direct TV.
