MUMBAI: In a bullish quarter that saw direct-to-home (DTH) operators post record subscriber additions, Reliance Digital TV did not move the needle at all. The DTH arm of Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Communications added no subscribers during the fiscal fourth quarter ended 31 March 2016. The company’s total subscriber base remained stagnant at 5 million, which translates into 6 per cent share of the DTH market. In the fiscal third quarter ended 31 December 2015, Reliance Digital TV had mopped up 100,000 subscribers to take its customer base to five million. For the quarter ended 30 September 2015, it had 4.9 million subscribers. In the prior quarter, the subscriber base stood at 4.87 million. Reliance Digital TV ranks last among the six private DTH operators in terms of subscriber numbers. In the fourth quarter ended 31 March 2016, three of the DTH operators have announced their subscriber figures. Airtel Digital TV added 619,000 net subscribers in Q4, its highest in the last 20 quarters. Videocon d2h added 0.59 million net subscribers while Dish TV had 508,000 new subscribers in the quarter. Dish TV’s net subscriber base stands at 14.5 million, as of 31 March 2016. Videocon d2h has 11.86 million subscribers while Airtel Digital TV has 11.72 net subscribers. Reliance Digital TV offers a full combo of standard definition, high definition and high definition-DVR STBs, as well as the largest channel bouquet. The company claims to have introduced a new technology that allows it to offer all 278 channels in HD-like quality. The service is available at nearly 37,350 outlets across nearly 5,650 Indian cities. The company has leveraged its retail and distribution reach, as well as other elements of infrastructure such as wireless network to expand its DTH presence. It also claims a set-top box (STB) failure rate of 0.97%. Its HD advanced digital video recorder (HD DVR) offers 200 hours of recording, trick play functions and universal remote for operating three devices.
