Odisha has finally got its first movie
channel, Alankar TV. The promoters of MSO
Ortel Communications have launched the
channel to beef up their television broadcasting
business, which is housed under Odisha
Television Network (OTN).

The 24×7 Odia movie channel completes the
bouquet of the network comprising a news
channel (OTV), a general entertainment channel
(Tarang), music channel (Tarang Music), and a
devotional channel (Prarthana).

The network believes that every genre should
have a dedicated channel in order to cater to the
diverse tastes of Odia audience in and outside
the state.

“A movie channel was the missing piece, and
with the launch of Alankar, we have completed
our bouquet. A 24-hour channel with all genres
mixed is not enough. To date, no one has a
movie genre-specific channel in Odisha. All our
competitors have a single channel with mixed
genres. This is where we are different,” said
Alankar TV creative head Ranjan Satpathy.
Alankar TV will primarily air latest and classic
Odia movies targeting viewers of all age groups.
The channel claims to have a library of over 300
movies from its network.

The company is in the process of signing deals
with advertisers.
Alankar has reserved one slot for regional ‘jatra’,
which is popular in Odisha. Going ahead, OTN
plans to venture into movie production where
Alankar will acquire exclusive rights to the
movies.

“Jatra is very popular in Odisha but we do not
carry it on our GEC. Hence, a movie channel
gives us the opportunity to have jatra in our
programming since the length of a full-fledged
jatra is about 2–2:30 hours, which is the
duration of any normal feature film,” Satpathy
added.

Alankar TV is a pay channel priced at Rs 16 per
month per household. It is presently available on
Ortel Communications’ base pack and local cable
platforms. The channel will soon extend to other
digital platforms.
Ortel Communications recently completed its IPO
and is listed on the domestic bourses.
