GUWAHATI: Prasar Bharati (PB) would focus on enhancing Doordarshan's satellite reach and expanding the reach of FM radio in the North East, PB Chief Executive Officer Jawhar Sircar said today.

''We have to rethink on our outreach policy in the North East and are discussing possibilities of re-engineering the network system of both Doordarshan and All India Radio'', Sircar told reporters here after rounding off his visit to Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Assam.

The terrestrial transmitter, prevalent in the North East, was being replaced by satellites, and ''we aim to focus more on satellite service for which matching infrastructure has to be set up in the region''. he said.

''Additional funding was required for the purpose and I met the chief ministers and governors of the three states to discuss the matter with them. They have assured they would take up the matter with the Centre'', he added.

Terresterial transmitters cannot be completely done away with in the North East but ''we shall concentrate in increasing satellite transmission in the region'', he said.

In case of AIR, short wave transmitters were on its way out due to its crackling sound and ''where it is of no use it might as well be closed'', he said.

''Our focus was now on increasing the reach of FM radio as it had the added advantage of being received on telephones which ensures that it will reach a wider audience'', the CEO said.

Sircar said so far there has been no policy decision in this regard but the situation was being examined so as to take DD and AIR to a wider population.

He claimed that AIR had a penetration of 92 per cent while Doordarshan reached 84 per cent population in the North East.

In a bid to increase the penetration, Village Councils in all the states of the region would be provided with set-top boxes.

Referring to the content and programming strategy of Doordarshan, the CEO said earlier the focus in North East was on self-commissioned programmes but ''now we are attempting to shift from this strategy to more viable programmes''.

''We have to look at the issue of revenue generation and raising TRP value and for this we are shifting to advertiser funded programmes which works well for us, simulcast strategy which is a good short-term strategy and also quality in-house programmes'', he said.

Commissioned programmes in Doordarshan were prevalent in Jammu and Kashmir and the North East but many issues were raised against these and ''now we have to get out of this system and come-back to in-house productions''.

The CEO said that during his visit to the North East, he viewed some excellent films which were telecast in the region alone and not in the rest of the country.

''These films must be taken out of the region and telecast through the national channels. Officials have been directed to prepare an inventory of good documentaries highlighting the cultural aspects of NE'', he said.

The National Dubbing Pool would be strengthened and Prasar Bharti officials have been directed to encourage the documentary filming community to make short films of 20 to 22 minutes duration, Sircar added.
