South Africa's public broadcaster will launch an entertainment channel on MultiChoice's DStv satellite TV platform by the end of 2014, in addition to its 24-hour SABC News channel.
The new entertainment channel – whose launch on the pay-TV platform has been delayed from November 2013 – will reportedly include archive content from the SABC library. It remains to be seen whether original programming will also be commissioned.
"There are some TV channels that we will capacitate ourselves and build ourselves to meet our mandate [for digital terrestrial television], but there's some entertainment TV channels – some specific niche entertainment TV channels – that we will go into partnerships with others and other public partners to ensure that we create entertainment that speaks to all South Africans," Leo Manne, the general manager for TV channels at the SABC, told Channel 24.
