MUMBAI: Sony TV has bought exclusive television rights for two upcoming films from Dharma Productions-Student of the Year and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani.
The broadcaster will pay about 50 crore for the seven-year exclusive satellite rights for the two films-one starring Ranbir Kapoor and the other directed by Karan Johar-three film and television industry executives familiar with the development told ET.
Dharma Productions COO Apoorva Mehta and Neeraj Vyas, business head of Sony Max and Mix at Sony Entertainment Television, confirmed the deal, but not the price.
Vyas said Student of the Year, which features three young debutants, is a fresh film from Johar and its music has already caught on. "As for the second film, it stars the hottest star of today, Ranbir Kapoor, whose appeal is right across demographics," he said.
Student of the Year releases two weeks from now, while Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani will come to theatres in March next.
Sony Entertainment Television has bought the rights for several successful films including Krissh 3, Talaash, Rowdy Rathore, Paan Singh Tomar, Tezz, Ek Tha Tiger and Jab Tak Hai Jaan in the last two-three years. Its partnership with Dharma dates back to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
Vyas said his spend on movie rights has not increased more than 15-20 per cent in spite of stiff competition among Hindi channels for movie rights.
Satellite rights have become an important revenue stream for film producers. However, while big films are always in demand, hundreds of small and medium budget films are struggling to find takers for satellite rights, as ET reported recently.
