Sony leases transponder capacity from AsiaSat 7 for new channel launches

MUMBAI: TV broadcaster Sony Pictures Networks (SPN) India is ready to expand its fleet of television channels. The company has signed a multi-year lease agreement with satellite operator Asia Satellite Telecommunications (AsiaSat) for a C-band transponder on AsiaSat 7 to launch new channels. The AsiaSat 7 capacity will support SPN’s expansion of standard-definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) channels in India, which is one of the fastest-growing pay TV markets in the world. In April, SPN will start broadcasting a new bouquet of SD and HD channels on AsiaSat 7 to Indian cable and pay TV networks. The company is expected to launch SAB HD, the HD version of its Hindi GEC SAB TV, in the first quarter of the next fiscal. It is ready to launch Sony BBC Earth and Sony BBC Earth HD through its joint venture with BBC Worldwide pending regulatory approvals. The company recently received five licences from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) under the SAB brand. The company has procured licences for SAB Bangla, SAB Tamil, SAB Punjabi, SAB Marathi and SAB Telugu. It had received another licence under the name Sony Tec through its subsidiary Bangla Entertainment, which owns and operates Bengali movie channel Sony Aath.

“As we continue to expand our TV channel offerings, availability of transponder space is a critical requirement. Our partnership with AsiaSat enables us to expand our reach into the Indian subcontinent, delivering quality programming to our diverse audiences. We look forward to working closely with AsiaSat to deliver our industry-leading TV services to more viewers across this dynamic TV market,” said SPN India SVP and head, PR and corporate communications Humsa Dhir. “We are especially delighted to have forged this new partnership with Sony Pictures Networks India to support our client’s TV service expansion in India. On AsiaSat 7, SPN enjoys instantaneous access to all cable operators, big and small, as well as pay TV platforms across the country and in the Indian subcontinent,” said AsiaSat VP sales and business development Philip Balaam. “SPN’s comprehensive entertainment programming is a strong addition to the TV service offerings on our platform. SPN is a key player in the region and we are very excited to play an expanding role in facilitating its service penetration in India, one of our prime markets,” Balaam added. AsiaSat operates six satellites—AsiaSat 3S, AsiaSat 4, AsiaSat 5, AsiaSat 6, AsiaSat 7 and AsiaSat 8. The AsiaSat satellite fleet serves both the broadcast and telecommunications industries. The company’s satellites offer access to over 830 million TV households across the Asia-Pacific region and now deliver 700 television and radio channels. AsiaSat also provides VSAT networks throughout the region. AsiaSat’s next satellite, AsiaSat 9 on order from the manufacturer, is planned for launch in late 2016/early 2017. SPN currently operates Sony Entertainment Television (SET), SET HD, Sony Max, Sony Pal, Sony Max HD, Sony Max 2, SAB TV, Sony Pix, Sony Pix HD, AXN, AXN HD, Sony Aath, Sony Mix, Sony Six, Sony Six HD, Sony ESPN, Sony ESPN HD and Animax. The company also operates video-on-demand (VoD) service Sony Liv and movie production unit under MSM Motion Pictures.
