RE: Tanhaiyan coming soon on hotstar
Hotstar pushes the pedal on original content with ‘Tanhaiyan’
Hotstar, Star India’s video-on-demand (VoD) service, is pushing the pedal on original content as it seeks to grow its audience base and younger demographic reach.
The OTT platform is set to roll out its first fiction web series, titled ‘Tanhaiyan’. More are expected to follow, setting the tone for original content on Hotstar.
Hotstar’s new move will further energise competition in a segment that is attracting new talent and investments from other OTT players.
‘Tanhaiyan’ will have a total of 10 episodes with a runtime of 20 minutes per episode. The series is under production and will be released early next year.
Produced by Unit 7 Network on behalf of 4 Lions Films, the romantic web series stars Surbhi Jyoti and Barun Sobti.
Unit 7 Network is focused on creating original content for the web, and ‘Tanhaiyan’ is the first offering from their stable. The show is produced by Gul Khan and Karishma Jain and directed by Gorky M.
Barun Sobti plays Haider Ali Khan while Surbhi Jyoti plays the role of Mira Kapoor. In the show, Haider and Mira meet at a wedding and sparks begin to fly but unknown to them, life has other plans. Set against the backdrop of a wedding, the show promises passion, romance, heartbreak and a musical score.
‘Tanhaiyan’ is Hotstar’s first major original fiction web series. The first original series of the VoD platform was a talk show hosted by RJ Malishka ‘M Bole Toh’. The VoD platform followed that up with a news comedy series ‘On Air with AIB’, which had 20 episodes including 10 in English and 10 in Hindi. The show was released on Hotstar first, followed by weekend airings on Star World and Star Plus.
Star India, Hotstar’s parent company, had also brought back its popular TV fiction show ‘Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon’ as a Hotstar Original after a gap of three years. It had also moved its three-month-old fiction show ‘Phir Bhi Na Mane… Badtameez Dil’ exclusively to Hotstar.
Hotstar currently offers over 50,000 hours of TV content and movies across eight languages. It also offers live coverage of major sporting events.
Hotstar is believed to be the fastest-downloaded app in India with 70 million downloads. The VoD service saw a humongous growth in consumption between July and August, with streamed content increasing to 2.5 billion minutes in August from 750 minutes in July. It also offers a premium service priced at Rs 199 per month, which includes HBO Original Series, English Premier League, Indian TV shows and new film premieres.
