A service channel for Tamil market is a wastage in a market with multiple satellite channels. How can they compete with likes of Sun, Star and Zee? Purpose of service channel is to offer something unique that satellite tv doesn't already have like k-dramas, international music, theatre, short films, international infotainment, sports and regional channels of non competitive market. No wonder DTH is losing to OTT players. Just watch the line-up of service channels of JioTV+ and compare with what DTH offers.

Well to be honest it would be difficult for any DTH or Cable TV operator to provide various service channels which offer niche/differentiated offerings, they can at max have some of these channels included via satellite mode not bcoz of any issue of tying up with concerned partners / content providers but more as new regulations for service channels make it difficult for operators + content providers to have sustainable / financially viable business model to run such channels.....operators still can somehow absorb certain operational costs as they have different revenue streams like NCF, Home Channels / EPG Banner ads, Carriage Fee channels, 20% subscription revenue share of regular packs/channels subscribed by its customers but for content providers of such service channels to register with MIB by paying fees then managing all the running costs involved which includes price of acquiring rights of content for India, having end to end encrypted solution to deliver it to operator, keeping the subscription price affordable managing to create a revenue share ratio with operator wherein for both parties it is profitable or atleast no loss scenario is agaon a challenge.....remember such channels cannot run regular ads and new rules allow such channels to have only 1 exclusive operator/platform as their partner

Overall it is quite difficult for operators and content providers to come up with such service channels via satellite mode however i am sure just like Jio TV+ operators like Airtel Digital TV/Airtel Mobile+ Broadband , Tata Play would be working on launching IPTV or Internet Based Channels via Mobile+ TV Apps to bring wide range of such service channels to its customers in near future

Adding to above point, due to this exclusivity clause under new regulations we may see many service channels getting dropped/discontinued in coming months as ongoing/old agreement period ends...for example we saw Let's Dance, Hits Service Channels getting dropped from Airtel Digital TV Platform while new service channel Bollywood Masala getting launched exclusively on Tata Play DTH platform

To avoid this we may see content providers engaging in discussions with operators & coming up with solution such as changing names and bring some differentiation in content of some of these service channels to continue being available across various platforms / operators ...recently Airtel Digital TV changing names of few service channels which had same / similar commonality on Tata Play platform may well have been done bcoz of above reason
