Direct-to-home (DTH) operator Tata Sky has teamed up with sportscaster Star Sports to launch a high-definition (HD) service called Star Sports Add On HD, which will enable its customers to watch matches that the sportscaster does not broadcast on its existing channels.
Initially, the live matches of the English Premier League and Bundesliga will be broadcast on this channel.
The new service, which went live on 25 October, will be available on channel nos 423 and 424 in the sports genre.
It will only be available to subscribers who have subscribed to the Star Sports pack and paid the HD access fee.
With the launch of this service, Tata Sky subscribers can watch live broadcast of sports content that is currently not available on any other linear channel.
Star Sports has rights to a roster of properties including the BCCI, ICC, Cricket Australia and England Cricket Board (ECB), International Hockey Federation, English Premier League, Bundesliga, US Open, Formula One, Indian Super League, Pro Kabaddi League, Hockey India League and Indian Badminton League. Star Sports has four standard definition (SD) and four HD channels each.
At times when there is a clash of multiple live events, the sportscaster finds it difficult to accommodate all the content on its existing band of channels.
Earlier, the two partners had launched an ad-free premium HD service called ‘Star Sports Premium HD’ during the ICC Twenty20 World Cup 2014.
The DTH operator was charging an HD access fee of Rs 125 per month from subscribers who wanted to avail of this channel.
